What is Paediatrics & Neonatology ?
Pediatrics and neonatology are both branches of medicine that focus on children’s health, but they have different scopes and areas of expertise.
Pediatrics
- Definition: The branch of medicine that deals with the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, typically up to age 18.
- Scope: Pediatricians manage a wide range of health issues, including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and the treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. They also address developmental and behavioral concerns.
- Training: Pediatricians complete medical school followed by a residency in pediatrics.
Neonatology
- Definition: A subspecialty of pediatrics that focuses specifically on the medical care of newborns, particularly those who are ill or born prematurely.
- Scope: Neonatologists manage complex health issues that affect newborns, including respiratory problems, congenital conditions, and complications from premature birth. They often work in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
- Training: After completing a residency in pediatrics, neonatologists undergo additional fellowship training in neonatology.
